I've tried a bunch of tools, including iftop, ntop, iptraf, and of course the very useful built-in netstat -tupln (supported options are OS-dependent), but the most practical for my use case turned out to be nethogs - it aggregates connections by the originating app, and is the least noisy of all.
Accessing OpenWrt. To turn a device into a network probe, you’ll need to be able to access the web user-interface of OpenWrt. This may be a different process depending on if you are attempting to connect to OpenWrt locally or over a WAN connection: OpenWrt is designed for any kind of embedded device, but is most commonly used for home gateways. Jan 05, 2020 · OpenWRT is an embedded Linux distribution that can be installed on a variety of routers or you can purchase a router that already has it. If you have been looking at ways to upgrade your router or have more flexibility with its firmware, you should take a look at the best OpenWRT routers recommended in this guide. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end. I'm running openwrt on a device and have a python script that listens and prints to screen multicast traffic on 239.2.1.1. However nothing is being printed to the screen and I believe this is a firewall issue. How do I make sure that multicast traffic is being allowed in on a lan interface running openwrt? If you then went to the firewall traffic rules and specifically allowed the OpenVPN traffic through (1194 UDP by default), it would work in reject mode. This is a better choice since leaving the WAN in accept means any services on your router (like ssh or SMB) are left to fend for themselves against incoming (possibly malicious) traffic. The nlbwmon daemon gathers per-host traffic statistics by querying netlink accounting data. Due to this approach, the executable is very small and does not rely on libpcap and CPU intensive raw sockets to monitor traffic. OpenWRT Bandwidth Monitor (wrtbwmon) is a lightweight, efficient, yet feature rich bandwidth monitor for routers running OpenWRT. I am using bandwidthd right now is that one can specify a pcap filter in /etc/bandwidth.conf and ensure that local traffic is not counted in the usage tallies.
